FOLLOW THESE PROCEDURES TO HELP PREVENT POSSIBLE
COMPLICATIONS:
FIRST HALF HOUR: Make
sure gauze remains in place, and do not touch with tongue or
fingers.
WHEN YOU GET HOME: Wash
hands and replace gauze. Bite gently and leave for 20 minutes.
Repeat this as often as necessary if oozing continues. Apply an
ice pack or cold Towel to cheek or jaw - 20 min. on/ 20 min. off,
until bedtime.
24 HOURS AFTER SURGERY: Dissolve
exactly 1 teaspoon of salt in 8 oz. of warm water (not hot). Rinse
mouth gently , using entire amount. Do this six times daily until
you next see the doctor. Promotes Healing.
FIRST 2-3 DAYS: Suck
on ice chips to keep surgery site cold to reduce swelling. Rest as
much as possible, lying down with head elevated. Remember to brush
softly on extraction site.
NAUSEA: Take one
ounce of carbonated drink or a pinch of salt with bicarbonate of
soda in a glass of water. Then drink mild tea, clear broth and eat
soft foods before resuming your regular diet.
DIET: A nutritional diet
is very important. During the first 24hours eat soup and soft
foods, gradually progressing to solid foods after a few days--
DO NOT SKIP MEALS! Do not drink
alcoholic beverages, and
ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING! until you
next see the doctor.

BELOW ARE HOME CARE SUGGESTIONS IN CASE OF COMPLICATIONS:
OOZING: A little
bleeding is normal. If this continues after gauze is removed,
apply thicker layer of gauze with light pressure. Repeat if
necessary after twenty minutes.
PERSISTENT BLEEDING: Apply
a moistened tea bag to wound area with gauze on top of it. Bite
down, applying light pressure for twenty minutes. Apply an ice bag
or cold towel compress to cheek and lie down with head elevated on
three pillows.
STIFF JAW: Chew gum at
intervals, especially while applying moist heat on the jaw. This
helps relax tension and brings relief.
SWELLING: After 24
hours, if there is swelling or the jaw stiffens, apply heat to the
outside of the face using a warm, moist towel, only for twenty
minutes out of every hour.
SHARP BONY EDGES: If you
had an extraction, and feel something hard when you place your
tongue on the surgical site, you may think it is part of the
tooth. This is the hard, bony wall that originally supported the
tooth. Leave it alone, and it will heal nicely.
